From Paint to Print: Constable’s English Landscape and Collaborative Making in Word and Image

I am researching the nature of the working relationship between John Constable and printmaker David Lucas, and the making and meaning of their joint prints series, English Landscape, and its sequels. I trained at the Courtauld Institute of Art and specialise in medieval and Renaissance fine and decorative art, 18th– and 19th –century British painting and printmaking, and the history of relief printmaking. I have worked as a curator for over twenty years with prints and paintings at the V&A. My headline projects include the co-curation of a major touring exhibition on Constable, the co-curation of a show on relief printmaking, and the creation of an award-winning education service for 25,000 schoolchildren, families and adult groups at Apsley House (formerly run as a branch of the V&A). My future projects include curating a V&A display on the collaboration between Constable and Lucas for 2026, the 250th anniversary of Constable’s birth.

My supervisors are Dr Bethan Stevens and Professor Meaghan Clarke, University of Sussex, and Dr Jenny Gaschke and Dr Sarah Grant, V&A.
